"our hero"

Seth Becker

This memorial website was created in the memory of our special HERO, Seth Becker who was born in North Carolina on August 16, 2005 and passed away on December 30, 2007 at the age of 2. He died at home in the arms of his mom and dad, after a long couragous fight with brain cancer.

On 4-10-07 WE HEARD THOSE HEARTBREAKING WORLD SHATTERING WORDS....YOUR SON HAS CANCER! IT WAS THE BEGINNING OF A JOURNEY THAT CHANGED OUR LIVES, OPENED OUR EYES TO A WORLD OF "CHILDHOOD CANCER", TESTED OUR FAITH IN GOD, AND LED US TO CHERISH EVERY MINUTE, BECAUSE WE know THAT TOMORROW MAY NEVER COME. WE SAW KIDS CURED AND KIDS EARN THEIR WINGS, WE SAW MIRACLES AND WE SAW TRAGEDY, WE SAW "NEWLY DIAGNOSED" KIDS, AND WE SAW RELAPSED KIDS. We saw things that parents should NEVER have to see their children go through. But most of all...we SAW HOPE! WE SAW HERO"S!

*

Seth was diagnosed with a stage 4 PNET brain tumor that was almost half the size of his head. He underwent a 9 1/2 hour surgery to remove the bulk of it .He had only a few days to live without the surgery! Seth stayed in ICU for almost 3 weeks after surgery, but finally was able to be moved and start chemo. He was our little miracle! He lost the use of his right side, and had many other obstacles..but he was a fighter, and he always tried to smile.  Seth spent 8 months with me (momma) living away from our home and family to get treatment in Durham at Duke hospital . We lived between the hospital and the Ronald McDonald House of Durham. There we met new friends, and made new memories, living in a "new world" of CANCER and Cancer treatments.

*
We gained strength to get through the coming months ,not because it was easy, but because that was OUR CHILD, and when your child is hurting, you FIND A WAY to get through for them.We took one day at a time, and learned that in the world of "cancer treatment" every day is unexpected, sometimes positive and sometimes cruel, but ALWAYS unexpected. We watched Seth battle for things that the Cancer had taken from him...the ability to walk, eat ,talk, and be a healthily 2 year old.We watched as he went through surgeries, treatments, transplants, procedures, scans ...and all the meds...so many meds. It was an 8 month battle for little Seth, and I treasure every minute of it. His spirit shined so strong, his JOY remained, and his LAUGHTER helped keep us strong. It was the hardest 8 months of my life..but will be my MOST TREASURED TIME OF MY LIFE FOREVER. Seth is my hero, my pride, my special ANGEL. He endured SO MUCH in that time, and he never quit, he kept his smile and his love,and he made so many friends, and brought so many people together, and gave so many hope. The ending is the hardest... WE SAW 3 MEANINGS OF GOING HOME....GOING HOME IN REMISSION, GOING HOME ON HOSPICE AND GOING HOME TO HEAVEN. WE SAW ALL THREE Of THOSE IN A VERY SHORT MONTH! I am so very proud of him, and I thank God every day for giving me the chance to have had such a special angel to love and care for. Seth changed me forever, and I LOVE HIM SO MUCH!

*

Seth was a hero for his ability to always smile and be happy, even during his horrible fight with brain cancer. He will forever live in the hearts of everyone who has ever met him. He had a "joy" that surrounded him, and touched the heart and soul of everyone he met! He was an angel on earth, and now, he is an angel in heaven.
Seth was amazing! No matter what, he tried to be happy and usually always had a big smile! He loves animals..We have horses,goats,dogs,cats,ducks,chickens,and a goose, and he loved them all! He also LOVED to play ball, he would throw it AWAY from you mostly, so you would have to go get it, and he would laugh, he was very funny.If he wanted to get you, he did have great aim, and since april, he only had one good side(his right side was bad from the tumor) so that was pretty good for one arm. He also had to have snacks with him at all times, even when he was sleeping! At home or in the hospital. In the hospital he was hooked on cool ranch doritoes and yoohoo, he had to have a bag of cool ranch, and a sippy cup of yoo hoo at all times! He would wake up in the middle of the night just to check if they were there! And he was a flirt!!! He LOVED the ladies, and they loved him. He mostly said uh oh, and mommy, but did say other things, I just heard those the most. He was a clean freak! He needed his hands cleaned EVERY time he touched something..Funny, and a pain in the butt!His favorite movie was Elmo in grouchland, I know it by heart..lol..He loved tractors (daddys) and trucks and cars, and he loved to throw out trash! I know that sounds funny, but he loved it. In the hospital, if the nurses let him throw out the trash, he didn't mind what they were doing to him so much, he looked forward to the trash part!! But more than anything, he was very funny, and loving, and happy. Anyone that has met him will tell you he is special, he just touched (in a big way) everyone he ever met. HE WAS/IS SPECIAL. He had a glow about him, a joy that surrounded him, and a sense of humor that completed him. And as his obstacles came, he found a way around them, it never stoped him from having fun! We had more fun in his hospital bed then most "normal" kids ever do!!! His bed was full of toys, and I was always there with him.

Seth has touched and changed so many peoples lives....I am just so proud of him. HE IS MY HERO!!!! He was so brave to go thru all the procedures and surgeries, and the chemo, and stem cells....and always found a way to smile!!! He made me smile during times that I would think it impossible to smile! I saw him go thru things that I could never do...how brave he was! I learned so many lessons from him along the way. We all did. He is our angel, and we love  and miss him so much!!!^^^WE LOVE YOU PUMPKIN^^^

~~~~CURRENT MISSIONS~~~
Oct 2nd UPDATE!!!!!!
The 1st annual Seth Becker memorial blood drive was on Oct.1st and it went GREAT!!! The kids stayed home from school and helped all day long, and the red cross team we had was wonderful, and the staff and members of Covenant bible Church who donated time and dessert items were awesome! And a special thanks to Bill Lyda for all your help! We ended with 48 pints of blood, and don't forget that each unit of blood multiplies by 3, so that's a lot of people who will get some much needed blood. A big thank you to Teddy Houser Race Cars and Robby England for bringing up the race cars to honor Seth... (Seth LOVED race cars), and for everyone who helped or donated. We are so happy, and looking forward to the next one. We handed out a lot of info on childhood cancer to all the people who came, and we set up the Bone marrow registry to be at the next blood drive. Thank you all for being a part of this with us!
We are in the planning stage of our next mission, more info soon.
The story behind the BUS-
Seth loved school busses, so we bought one. We were going to turn it into a camper so when Seth went into remission we could travel in his BUS. We had plans to bring him to all kinds of places and to let him experience life to the fullest!!! We wanted him to do as much as possible and have lots of fun in case his cancer ever returned!
*
But Seth came home for only a few weeks before we found out the cancer had returned so aggressivly that it was beyond treatment!! He was never really in remission! We found this out on Dec. 20th, and he passed on Dec. 30th. It all happened so fast!!
*
So, looking at the unfinished BUS in the driveway was very sad. We had plans for it that directly related to Seth. Mike and I decided that we needed to use the bus to help other children and families that were going through what we went through, and also to spread the word about the reality of this CANCER BEAST that is claiming all these sweet children! So....
Hearts of Hope for Children with Cancer  *****Seths AWARENESS BUS****** Was born!!!
(There are pics of the Bus in the photo album)
*
We have finished the interior now, and Mike painted it yesterday!! (8-10-08). We now are looking for some sponsors to help with the vinyl stickers for the advertising. We also will need some sponsors to help with gas money and travel expences when we head out on our mission trips. Anyone who is willing to help with any of our needs will be proudly advertised on th BUS! We will also give you some pics of our mission.
Update 8-21-08....we found sponsors to finish the vinyl ads on the bus! Thank you to the Garmon family +Transport Graphics!
*
We will be collecting toys throughout the year and delivering them to Cancer Hero's....these kids are so special, and we will find many ways to make them smile.
We also will be making stops, and handing out info on facts, symptoms, stories, pictures, whatever it takes to make people CARE. Thats how things will change..people need to know, so they can care, so they can help make a difference! We will also educate people on the foundations that put the MOST money they raise into the search for a cure. We will have the latest info on government funding (or lack of) and info on the new bills and acts in congress.
*
If you are able to make a "love gift" to help with the AWARENESS BUS, we thank you very much! You can send your love gift to : Hearts of Hope, 5164 Amity Lane, Iron Station, NC. 28080
If you want to be a sponsor for your love gift, please e-mail me (Tina) @ Heartsofhope08@aol.com
*
We have been talking to alot of people that we meet on the caring bridge site...we hope to be able to set up events with them in their hometowns...We are so excited about this BUS>
*
The Awareness BUS is just that..AWARENESS. We are NOT collecting money donations for organizations, we are just informing the public of the need for it. We will be collecting toysfor the kids in the hospitals and clinics, and much needed items such as food, clothes, and personal care items for families living in the Ronald McDonald house.
*
We can however accept "love gifts" if you want to help. That would be used for gas and other travel related expences. As well as the Awareness items that we would be handing out (wristbands, info packets, t-shirts, etc.) But if you want to donate a large sum of money...please give it to a research organization to help the "fight for a cure".
www.curesearch.org This site is great, and lets you know how you can get involved in making a difference!
Childhood cancers are the #1 disease killer of children - more than asthma, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and pediatric AIDS combined.
One in every 330 Americans will develop cancer by the age of 20. On the average, 12,500 children and adolescents in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer each year.
Childhood Cancers are cancers that primarily affect children, teens, and young adults. When cancer strikes children and young adults it affects them differently than it would an adult.
Attempts to detect childhood cancers at an earlier stage, when the disease would react more favorably to treatment, have largely failed. Young patients often have a more advanced stage of cancer when first diagnosed. (Approximately 20% of adults with cancer show evidence the disease has spread, yet almost 80% of children show that the cancer has spread to distant sites at the time of diagnosis).
A special thank you to the Ronald McDonald house of Durham for giving us a "home" while we were stuck out of town and away from our familiy for 8 long months. You all became a part of Seths life, and I will never forget you.
Thank you to the MeFine foundation, for all your support and help. You are a wonderful organization, and you are there when we need help the most!
Thank you to Covenant Bible Church-  you reached out to us when we needed it most. You gave us a "family" and hope and a place of worship. We were losing faith on our own, and you found us.. You helped us through the most difficult time in our lives, and we are forever grateful for your love . We will do the same for others for the rest of our lives.. THANK YOU.
